When did vulgar fashion become cool?

Something I've been thinking about lately is whether there is really such a thing as unfashionable anymore. The more outlandish or "ugly" an outfit is, the more fashionable it seems to be. We are living in a time where there is no longer such a thing as bad  style. What is celebrated instead, is uniqueness and individuality.

Due to this shift in mindset and direction, a new trend has been created: vulgar fashion. A look not quite wearable in every day life but popularised by a new wave of designers and their devoted celebrity followers.

It's not pretty, it's not elegant and it's certainly not refined. What it is, however, is modern, crude, a little grotesque, sometimes slightly uncomfortable and undoubtedly "cool".
